Martha Kent found alive!

Eva Marie Saint will play Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark Kent/Superman in Bryan Singer's Superman film for Warner Bros. Pictures. Brandon Routh is playing Superman. Saint, who starred in the Alfred Hitchcock classic "North by Northwest," co-stars in Wayne Wang's "Because of Winn-Dixie," to be released by 20th Century Fox on Feb. 18, and will also appear in Wim Wenders' "Don't Come Knocking," to be released by Sony Pictures Classics in the fall.

What I like most about this casting is that Ms. Saint is currently 81 years old, which means she won't be playing Martha Kent in flashbacks, as some people have postulated. She'll be playing Martha as the mother of the adult Clark, which means she'll still be alive and that makes me very happy. I'll be even happier when they cast Jonathan and officially erase his death from the franchise.

Sam Huntington cast as Jimmy Olsen

Superman has found his sidekick. Sam Huntington has been cast as Daily Planet cub reporter Jimmy Olsen in Bryan Singer's Superman movie.

The cast includes Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, Hugh Laurie as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White and James Marsden as Richard White. Kate Bosworth is in negotiations to play Lois Lane.

Olsen was a wide-eyed photographer who even had a watch with a Superman signal. Olsen had his own comic in the 1960s and '70s titled "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen." Since the late '80s, the comics have portrayed Olsen in a more serious light.

I have no idea who he is, but from that picture there, visually he's just about perfect so I can't complain about that.

Picture of the Kent farm set in Australia

A farm outside Tamworth will serve as the Kents' home in the latest Superman movie.

The property, 45km from Tamworth, will become the Kansas family home where young Clark Kent grows up before taking on his Superman identity.

"It's early days yet, but I can say a property in that area is being transformed into the Kent farm for the film," a Warner Bros spokesman said.

Laurie talks about the movie... kind of
Laurie confirmed that he will play Daily Planet Editor in Chief Perry White in the film, but more than that the British-born actor couldn't reveal – even if he wanted to. Warner Bros. is keeping the story so carefully guarded that he hasn't even been allowed to read the script yet. “I have to read it in a room with an armed security guard,” he says. “They're terrified. These things get on the Internet.”

Marsden & Laurie Aboard Singer's Superman

Director Bryan Singer has cast James Marsden, who played Cyclops in Singer's two "X-Men" movies, and Hugh Laurie, who stars in the Singer-executive produced Fox series House, in Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman.

The Hollywood Reporter says Marsden will play Lois Lane's love interest, Richard White. Laurie is in final talks to play Perry White, editor in chief of the Daily Planet. The two characters are related, though the studio declined comment on if they are father and son.

I don't know about you, but when I think "Perry White" I don't think "skinny British man". I can't recall seeing him in anything, though, so again I will reserve judgement until I've seen the movie. But thus far, casting-wise, he looks the furthest from the way the character does in the comics. In fact, besides the fact that they're both middle-aged white men, there's no resemblance whatsoever. However... he can't be a worse choice than Michael McKean, so he has that going for him. :)

Lois Lane and Lex Luthor confirmed!

Superman has found his Lois Lane and his Lex Luthor.

Kate Bosworth is in negotiations to play the Man of Steel's plucky fellow reporter, and Kevin Spacey is set to play the superhero's nemesis in Bryan Singer's Superman movie for Warner Bros. Pictures.

The comic book movie would reunite the two actors, who currently appear in Spacey's "Beyond the Sea" as Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin.

The casting of Bosworth was a long process that ultimately rested on a chemistry test between the actress and Brandon Routh, who is playing Superman, sources said. Bosworth reportedly beat out the likes of Claire Danes, Linda Cardellini and Michelle Monaghan.

Sources said Singer wanted Spacey early on but that the Oscar-winning actor's commitment to London's Old Vic Theatre, where he is artistic director, caused scheduling snafus on the road to making a deal. Spacey, who is in rehearsals for "National Anthems" at the Old Vic, will do a limited run of "The Philadelphia Story" at the theater before moving to the Superman movie, which has a March start date.

Polly Cohen is overseeing for the studio.

Bosworth will next be seen in Fox Searchlight's "Bee Season" and is repped by UTA, One Management and Offer Webber Dern.

Spacey, who next appears in Millennium Film's "Edison," is repped by WMA, manager Joanne Horowitz and attorney Stone Meyer Genow.

I think Spacey will make a great Luthor, I really do. Bosworth... I've not seen her in anything, but I'll give her a fair chance to impress me. But those differently-colored eyes are messing with my head. :)

Screenwriter discusses the Superman script... again

"...wait till you see it, it's going to be amazing. I wish I could tell you anything about it, but they would murder me. We're almost done with the script. We start shooting in March. Bryan Singer is directing it. It will be a back-to-basics Superman. There will be no changing of the mythology. It will be the most iconic, epic version of Superman told so far. It won't be an origin story."

Patrick Stewart on Jor-El

Question : There are rumors that Bryan Singer wants you for the role of "Jor El" in the upcoming SUPERMAN movie? Is that correct?

Stewart : I also heard these rumors, but so far Bryan did not ask me about it. I had recently a small heart surgery - nothing serious - and while I was at the hospital, Bryan called me. We spoke a long time - yet he did not ask me. But since I am already in two big franchises, why not also in a third or a fourth?

Unconfirmed Lois Lane casting rumor

Reliable sources inform us that Kate Bosworth has won the role of Daily Planet's feisty yet incident prone reporter. After many young actresses screentested alongside Bradon Routh - with Elisha Cuthbert, Claire Danes and Keri Russell all believed to have come close it was Bosworth who Singer decided on. Kate who recently starred in Beyond The Sea now joins an impressive looking cast believed to be Shaun Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, Spacey as Lex Luthor and Brandon Routh as Superman.

New writing team on "Superman"

Following Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee’s twelve-part “For Tomorrow” story (and an issue of Judd Winick and Ian Churchill’s Shazam story), Superman really gets back to Smallville. Literally.

Following up on yesterday’s news of Adventures of Superman getting a new penciller in the person of Karl Kerscl in May, Superman gets a full creative team turnover, with Mark (Smallville) Verheiden coming on board as writer, with Ed (Birds of Prey) Benes joining the book as penciller.

Changes comingin the Superman comics in 2005

Without saying too much, 2005 will see many changes for Superman, both as a character in the DCU, and throughout his respective three ongoing series. First up in these changes will be a shuffling of the creative teams on the titles, given the previously reported departure of Chuck Austen from Action comics as writer, as well as the conclusion of Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee’s twelve issue “For Tomorrow” storyline on Superman.

Screenwriter discusses the Superman script

After many failed attempts at bringing Superman back to the big screen by some of Hollywood's biggest writers, we asked Harris how he feels about being the one that finally got it done. "I can't look at it like that at all, because we're not operating on the same playing field. We didn't each pitch our stories to the same person, you know? It's like, the Superman vision that's out there for our movie is a combination of me, Mike [Dougherty] and Bryan [Singer]. And Bryan's really the champion here, and Bryan decided this is the story that [he] wants to tell, I believe in this story totally, and so we'll take it out and see if we can move it forward, so it's really a group effort."

"...I thought that X-Men was a big movie, but this scope is another step bigger, which is really cool. And they're building so much stuff too. I can tell you that they are building a portion of Metropolis, like a major back lot that's amazing. It's like three intersecting city blocks and everything is four stories tall. And it's a permanent back lot, it will be like a permanent New York City slash Metropolis."

Spacey on the new Superman movie

"There's kind of a trade-off," he continued. "You get paid more money when you do those kind of movies. I do more independent movies and I certainly produce more independent movies than big studio films. I want to be in the game, and being in the game allows me to do the other stuff that I want to do. So I'll always try to balance that. Superman is a big franchise; there's no doubt about it."

Smallville this season and next

In the latest issue of Dreamwatch magazine, Al Gough talks about season four of "Smallville" and beyond:

"We're trying to have fun with a little more of the DC universe. Perry White's going to make a return, we're going to introduce Krypto [Superman's dog], which I think we found a fun way to do and Mr Mxyzptlk will show up."

Gough also talks about season five:

"In season five, they've obviously graduated high school and now as young adults they have to decide where they are going to college and all of those sorts of issues that come up. We'll see more of Metropolis in season five, as well as other superheroes from the DC universe."

Singer talks about the casting of Routh

"When you're casting a film of this size, you've got to look at three things. First, talent. Second, does he look like the guy and have the physical presence -- if Brandon walked into your office, you'd step back and say, 'Oh my God, it's Superman.' And third, you have to find a personality who can contend with all the rigors involved in making a show you're going to shoot for five months, with a lot of stunts and visual effects. That's a lot of work. A lot of work. Brandon had all three qualities."

Clip of Brandon Routh

BrandonRouth.com has put up a one minute video clip of Bradon from his appearance on "Will & Grace". I highly recommend you check it out. He's only got one line so you can't really judge his acting ability, but I think perhaps his voice alone will give you some idea of what kind of Superman he'll be. He's skinny in the clip, but so was Christopher Reeve when he had his screen tests (which are excellent and can be seen in the special features on the "Superman: The Movie" DVD).

As long as he puts on the weight and muscle (and we have every reason to believe he will), I'm feeling better about him all the time.
